Iguanas

The spines along their back and tails evoke memories of a long-gone dinosaur era. Male spikes are longer and thicker than female spikes. But when faced with dangerous predators, rather than using their spikes, Iguana will lash with their tails which they can ultimately drop. It can re-grow over time.

Antbirds

Antbirds are generally small birds with rounded wings and strong legs. Some species communicate warnings to rivals by exposing white feather patches on their backs or shoulders. Zeledon's antbird feeds on insects, and regularly follows swarms of army ants in order to catch prey flushed by the swarms, but it is not an obligate ant-follower like some species of antbirds.

More Iguanas...

They are easy to spot due to their– as the name tells – green color. Tail included, they can grow longer than 2 meters and weigh up to 10 kg. Green iguanas spend most of their lazy lives on trees but are also good swimmers.

Spiders

Costa Rica is home to some pretty interesting arachnids, but of the more than 20,000 species of spiders in the country, only a handful present any danger to humans. Unfortunately, within this handful is the most poisonous spider on the planet: the banana spider (Phoneutria fera), also known as the Brazilian wandering spider.

Insects

Deep in the cover of the rainforest are an astounding abundance of unique, exotically colored and often bizarre-looking tropical insects. Thousands of varieties of butterflies, beetles, moths, dragonflies, bees, grasshoppers, termites and ants inhabit the jungles of Costa Rica.
