Destination: Mkomazi National Park, Tanzania
Expedition: African lions, the “Kings of the Jungle” are glorified predators that conjure up visions of ferocious attacks on anyone who crosses their path. While lion attacks on humans and livestock do happen, the lions have much more to fear from us. Deo Tarimo, founder and director of the Mkomazi Carnivore Project has a plan to study and help mitigate human-lion conflict in Northern Tanzania. He and his team will use GPS tracking collars and camera traps to study the movements of the local lion population, while simultaneously interviewing local farmers and villagers about their own lion interactions. The goal: To find ways that lions and humans can live in harmony in this part of Africa.
