Fall in Love with the Marine Animals of Georgia Aquarium
Are you seal-iously excited for the autumn months? See how penguins, sea otters, and whales celebrate the season (Hint: with plenty of pumpkins).
How we feel about seasons other than fall? Don’t be fooled by that cute tongue – this silly Asian small-clawed otter has some sharp teeth that are well-suited for a varied diet that includes crabs, shellfish, and other crustaceans.
Small pumpkins for this small-clawed otter. Asian small-clawed otters are the smallest species of otter; only weighing between 4 and 11 pounds!
We are seal-iously excited for fall season. Georgia Aquarium’s harbor seals have already picked out their pumpkins, but we think they are the cutest in the patch.
Those big eyes are gord-geous! Harbor seals have large eyes that provide excellent underwater vision.
A few of our favorite fall things: maple leaves, maple syrup and Maple the beluga whale!
Here you can see penguin, Bakari, meeting a new beluga friend, Maple! Both Maple and Bakari seem to have a fascination for fall décor.
Georgia Aquarium’s southern sea otters present the perfect pumpkin picture. These otters already have their winter coats on – the sea otter’s body is covered in a thick coat helps to maintain its body temperature in the cold ocean water. The fur of the sea otter is the densest of all mammals.
Penguin, Matu, has collected his picks from the patch! African penguins like Matu, are listed as ‘Endangered’ on the ICUN Red List. Their populations are largely depleted and continue to decline.
Georgia Aquarium’s snakes are ssslithering into fall. Snakes are cold-blooded animals which means as temperatures drop, they become sluggish and lethargic, much like humans do when we get warm.
African penguin, Nalo, is ready to go trick-or-treating! Georgia Aquarium’s penguins are often taken on strolls around other galleries, which serves as enrichment by allowing them to explore new surroundings while seeing some of the Aquarium’s other animals.
Georgia Aquarium wishes you all a fantastic fall!
