Rome, Italy
Rome is an ancient city, originally founded in 753 BC. Through a tumultuous past, there are a few ancient sites in this capital city that still exist today. Modern Rome is a bustling city set among the sites of the past.
The Colosseum
The Colosseum was opened in 80 AD and is the largest amphitheater ever built in Ancient Rome. Made of limestone, volcanic rock, and concrete, this massive structure was home to the dark past of gladiators, Christian martyrs, and the traditions of Roman imperial power.
Piazza di Spagna & the Spanish Steps
The stunning Piazza di Spagna was originally the home of the Spanish Embassy. The steps were built to connect said embassy to Trinità dei Monti at the top. Restored and reopened in 2016, the piazza and Spanish steps are a must-see.
Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain was the work of many artists from its commission in 1629 to its completion in 1762. It is the largest fountain and the most famous in the city. It is estimated that over $3,500 is thrown in the fountain by tourists daily. The funds go towards subsidizing grocery stores for Rome's residents experiencing hardships.
Roman Forum
The Roman Forum is what remains of what was once the center of ancient Roman city life. Once a marketplace, the Forum was the site of trials, elections, gladiator fights, and more.
Pantheon
The Pantheon is a former Roman temple and it is now a Catholic Church. The site was always home to a temple, but the current structure was commissioned by the Emperor Hadrian and completed around 125 AD.
Vatican City
Vatican City is its own independent city-state nesetled in the middle of Rome. Home to famous sites like St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Square. Vatican City is the home to the leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis.
