Jakarta, Indonesia
Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, lies on the coast of Java. Attracting migrants from all over the archepelago, Jakarta is a melting pot of cultures including Javanese, Chinese, European, Arabic, and Indian. One of the oldest cities in Southeast Asia, Jakarta started as an important trading port for the Sunda Kingdom. Now the country's center for economics, politics, and culture, Jakarta is the world's second most populous urban area, after Tokyo.
National Monument
The Republic of Indonesia's National Monument stands in the center of Merdeka Square. Symbolizing the fight for Indonesian independence, it is a 433-foot-tall obelisk topped with a flame covered in gold foil. The monument opened to the public in 1975, and features a viewing platform more than 370 feet above the ground.
Taman Mini Indonesia Indah
Located in East Jakarta, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah is a culture-based recreational mini park. Operated by the Government of Indonesia, the park serves as an encapsulation of Indonesian culture. From Indonesian vernacular architecture to a collection of traditional clothing, the pavillion showcases virtually all aspects of daily life in Indonesia. Additionally, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah has a lake, cable cars, museums, and a theater — making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city.
Istiqlal Mosque
The largest mosque in Southeast Asia, and sixth largest in the world, Istiqlal Mosque is next to Merdeka Square and the Jakarta Cathedral. The mosque was built to commemorate Indonesian independence, so it was named "Istiqlal," an Arabic word for "independence." Istiqlal Mosque has seven gates representing the Seven Heavens in Islam.
Museum Bank Indonesia
Museum Bank Indonesia is a bank museum in Jakarta Old Town. This heritage building was the former central bank of the Dutch East Indies before being nationalized in 1953. Now the former-bank serves as a museum to educate the public on its role in Indonesian history.
Jakarta Cathedral
Jakarta Cathedral, or "The Church of Our Lady of Assumption," is a Roman catholic cathedral in central Jakarta. Built in neo-gothic style, it is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Jakarta.
Ancol Beach
Ancol is a coastal lowland region of northern Jakarta. Stretching from Kota Tua Jakarta to Tanjung Priok, the area features the main beach resort in the city. It is also one of the largest integrated tourism areas in Southeast Asia.
