Amsterdam, Netherlands
Originating as a small fishing village, Amsterdam has grown to the largest city in the Netherlands. Located in northern Holland, the city's elaborate canal systems have made it a UNESCO World Heritage site. Amsterdam draws over 5 million international visitors per year for its museums, famous red light district, and cannabis coffee shops.
Vondelpark
Vondelpark is a 120-acre public, urban park. Opened in 1865, the park has about 10 million visitors each year. The park features a rose garden, playground, open-air theater, and several bars and restaurants.
Dam Square
Dam Square is one of the most notable locations in Amsterdam for its shopping, historic sights, and famous monument. Created in the 13th century, the square is known for its frequent carnivals and street performances. Dam Square is home to the 17th century Royal Palace, New Church, National Memorial statue, and Beurs van Berlage — a former stock exchange building turned concert hall.
Bloemenmarkt
Bloemenmarkt is the only floating flower market in the world. Started in 1862, this market is sited on the canal between Muntplein and Koningsplein. Every Monday through Saturday, Bloemenmarkt is filled with the vibrant colors and smells of fresh flowers. In addition to the Netherlands' famous Dutch tulips, you can find traditional souvenirs from the market's 15 gift shops.
Leidseplein
Leidseplein square boats a buzzing nightlife scene in downtown Amsterdam. Facing Vondelpark, bars and shops line Leidseplein in the summer. In the colder months, an outdoor skating rink covers Leidseplein square. The square is home to famous music venues like Melkweg and Paradis; and the Stadsschouwburg city theater.
Artis
ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo is located in central Amsterdam. Built in 1838, it is the oldest zoo in the city and one of the oldest in all of Europe. In addition to the historic zoo, Artis also has an aquarium, planetarium, and an art and sculpture collection.
Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum is a Dutch National Museum dedicated to arts and history. Located in Museum Square, the Rijksmuseum was founded in 1798 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808. The largest art museum in the country, the Rijksmuseum has a display of more than 8,000 works of art and history, with a total collection of 1 million objects. With more than 2 million visitors annually, the Rijksmuseum frequently makes the list as the most visited museum in the country.
