Gaztelugatxe, Spain
The real-life Dragonstone is an islet on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. The island is connected to the mainland by a zig-zagging man-made bridge, recognized as one of the world's grandest staircases. At the top of the peak, visitors will find a small chapel. It is said touching the chapel's bell times will grant you a wish. Maybe you'll wish for Varys to come back to life.
Monsanto, Portugal
Inhabited since Paleolithic times, Monsanto is classified as one of the historic villages of Portugal. In 1938, it was also named the most Portuguese village in all of Portugal. The town's granite houses, narrow alleys, and lush greenery bring about an aura of medieval charm. Monsanto is known for its authentic culture and relics from an era long, long ago. Visitors enjoy the town's namesake castle which boasts stunning views of the surrounding area.
St Michael's Mount, England
Saint Michael's Mount is a historic castle found on a tidal island in Mount's Bay. The rocky island is also home to a medieval church and small living community. The oldest buildings date back to the 12th century. At low tide, locals and visitors can walk across the causeway to reach the island. Once there, St. Michael's Mount boasts stunning architecture and expansive views of the bay.
Castleton, England
Castleton is a popular tourist village located in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, England. The area is known for its quintessentially classic English architecture and wealth of local history. Castleton is a major walking center that was first settled by the Celts. The area then became prosperous through lead mining. In fact, the area is still home to one of the oldest lead mines in England, Odin Mine, which is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Cáceres, Spain
You may have spotted the Old Town of Cáceres as King's Landing in the seventh season of Game of Thrones. Western Spain's UNESCO World Heritage Centre is back in House of the Dragon. The town features a mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture with cobbled streets and palaces perfect for transporting viewers back in time. Fun fact: The capital of Cáceres was founded by the ancient Romans and includes evidence that the city was inhabited by many different cultures.
Holywell Bay, England
The beautiful coastline of Holywell Bay makes a perfect backdrop for movies and vacationers alike. This coastal village boasts golden sand beaches and grass-tufted dunes. At low tide, visitors can explore the grotto-like St. Cubert's Well, a natural cave carved out of the cliffs by the ocean's waves. Inside explorers are treated to a kaleidoscope of colors caused by freshwater minerals.
La Calahorra, Spain
La Calahorra is located at the base of the Sierra Nevada foothills, in the province of Granada, Spain. It is most famously known for Castillo de La Calahorra (La Calahorra Castle). Originally constructed from 1509–1212, the castle has been declared a Bien de Interés Cultural monument since 1922. It's considered a well-preserved prominent work of the Italian Renaissance.
