'Akaka falls are the park's namesake. This 422-foot tall waterfall is visible from a half-mile walking loop along the park. Also visible is Kahūnā Falls, a 300-foot tall waterfall that plunges into a gorge, and several smaller cascades.
The park is located 11 miles north of Hilo, along the northeastern Hilo coast. This pleasant hike is easily accessible and takes about an hour.
Akaka Falls State Park is home to diverse wildlife like these yellow-billed cardinals, introduced to the island from South America.
The short hike takes visitors through a lush rainforest with picturesque flowers, like this bright red torch ginger flower providing shelter for a green gecko.
