A Look at the Life of Bo Obama
Former US President Barack Obama and his family said goodbye to their beloved Portuguese water dog, Bo, who passed away from cancer May 8. He was 12-years-old.
Bo joined the Obama family in 2009, after the President promised his daughters, Sasha and Maila, a puppy following his 2008 election. Bo was the first of two family pets, with another Portugeuse water dog, Sunny, joining the Obamas in 2013.
"As a family, we will miss Bo dearly," said former First Lady Michelle Obama on Instagram. "But we are thankful that he lived such a joyful life full of snuggles, games of fetch, and evenings spent lying on the couch."
During his time at the White House, Bo was a constant fixture at various events, meeting everyone from schoolchildren to dignitaries like Oprah Winfrey and Pope Francis.
"For more than a decade, Bo was a constant, gentle presence in our lives—happy to see us on our good days, our bad days, and everyday in between," Obama wrote on Twitter.

Puppy Energy
We bet Bo couldn't believe the size of the yard that came with his new home. The Obamas were said to be attracted to the Portuguese water dogs, given that the breed is good for individuals with alleriges.
Bo's Big Debut
The Obamas introduced Bo to the White House press pool on April 14, 2009. The dog was a present from then-US Senator Ted Kennedy, who had a Portuguese water dog of his own named Splash.
Portuguese Snow Dog
Portuguese water dogs were made for the sea, but Bo does just fine with the snow! Here he is after a blizzard dropped 10 inches of powder in Washington back in 2009.
First Dog Duties
Bo often joined the family at various events in and out of the White House, as seen here in this visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland back in 2013.
Bo on the Road
It's easy to travel with your family when they fly private. Bo is escorted off Air Force One following a family vacation to Martha's Vineyard in 2009.

Bo and Sunny Obama
Bo wasn't the only four-legged fixture in the Obama White House. He would be joined by another dog, Sunny, who the Obamas welcomed in 2013.
Presidential Pup Duties
Bo and Sunny were constant companions of the Obamas, traveling with them to various events and engagements. Here they are on a visit to the Children’s National Health facilities in 2016.
