The fund, which supports global conservation efforts for endangered species, was actually founded in 2018 as a birthday gift to Ellen DeGeneres from her wife, actress Portia de Rossi. The Ellen Fund’s first project was to secure a future for wild mountain gorillas by supporting a 12-acre science and education campus for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in northern Rwanda, which is set to open in late 2021. And while The Ellen Fund has been known for support of gorilla conservation, The Ellen Fund is much more than that.
With the release of discovery+ documentary Endangered–a conservation documentary produced and narrated by Ellen–the fund launched their Endangered campaign to raise $1 million toward effective programs supporting the species and communities featured in the film.
“I love animals, and I want to protect them, especially when they’re endangered,” said Ellen. “We need these incredible creatures and they need our love and compassion to help save them.”
This documentary follows not only Ellen’s beloved gorillas, but also clouded leopards, Indonesian songbirds, sharks, frogs, lemurs, and giraffes. The Endangered campaign will support the most effective non-profits that serve these species on the ground, providing more hope for the animals featured in Endangered. Through this campaign, The Ellen Fund will focus on local solutions along with racial and gender equity, so people will be helped nearby.
